(Back to Questions) Q: What does "keep the Sabbath holy" mean? How does God feel about
working on Sundays, or doing chores, etc? Is the Old Testament law now
not in effect? |

A: The
Sabbath is more than an Old Testament command (Exodus 20:8). It is
also a New Testament blessing (Mark 2:27). Jesus blessed the Sabbath,
not to enslave us, but to bless us, as is the case with any command of
God. Honoring the Sabbath remains an issue of trust and obedience.
The
resurrection of Jesus, being on the first day of the week, became the
reason for first century Christians to honor the Sabbath on Sunday.
Certainly we depend on the leading of the Holy Spirit regarding our
activities.
One college student recently told us she never does school
work on Sundays. She needs the break and is committed to doing things
'different' on Sundays.
God knows that life is unfulfilling if
we don't have a day for 'different' once a week. And Sundays provide
the best opportunity for most people to break the routine, to rest, and
to gather together to "spur one another on toward love and good deeds"
and to "encourage one another" (Hebrews 10:24-25).
